Nationalism and sport

Nationalism and sport are often tangled, as sports provide for symbolic competition between nations; sports competition reflects national conflict, and you can say it is a tool of diplomacy. Differnt sports competitions are held between different national teams. Mostly the sports are played between different nations. It fills the team and the peoples with the love for their country. As the soprts are played between different nations teams it encourges the use of sporting events for nationalist purposes. Sometimes nationalisim also creates problem for the countries. This unwanted feeling of nationalism has reared its ugly head in other forms of sport too. It is the reason why nowadays big bucks have become involved in sport. All of us love to watch an India-Pakistan cricket match. The people of these two neighbours feel it is their prerogative to watch the match often at the expense of office hours, school timings so that they can root for their country. The result usually leads to "traditional rivalries" between the teams and old wounds to open up between the nations. This misplaced patriotic fervour spoils the grace of the game and confirms that nationalism is a wasteful effort in sport.
